| Katie's Qualifications
Katie
Horner's credentials as Chief Meteorologist are immediately called into
question when one investigates her background and the
makeup of KCTV 5's weather department.
Katie's degree is not in meteorology,
as you might think, but in
public relations and
marketing. It might seem like we are nit picking
as PR and marketing degrees are fairly common among TV
and radio personalities, but when you look deeper we're
left wondering why she had to attend 3 different
colleges to complete her degree.
Yet, she was chosen to
replace Gary Amble, who actually has an Atmospheric
Science degree from KU, as the Chief Meteorologist at
KCTV 5 in 1998. Which leaves us to wonder if KCTV
cares more about their meteorologist's ability to
provide accurate and informative information or their
ability to sensationalize the weather.
Katie's bio has recently
been changed to omit her jumping from school-to-school,
but we still can't help but wonder why she couldn't
commit to one school and stick it out. She
attempts to explain one of her school moves as a result
of
her parents moving to St. Louis, but that excuse seems suspect
when most students have already left home by their
junior year of college.
We're still wondering what
happened to that
meteorology degree she was pursuing. Maybe if
she'd spent half the time she spent in the gym, in
class, she'd have completed her pursuits. On the
other hand, she does run a mean triathlon.
It has come to our
attention that Katie Horner may have received an
Atmospheric Science degree from Mississippi State
through their correspondence course for
broadcasters. However, since she or KCTV 5
neglects to put this information in her bio, we are
unable to confirm. Until that time, we will leave
the preceding commentary in place because as one local
meteorologist told us, "The Mississippi State course is
not very good for starters." They went on to say,
"I have been to weather conferences with her, had
discussions over dinner about the material presented,
and it was as if we were speaking another language. She
had no clue."
Tell KCTV 5 you aren't going to put up
with it anymore!

"Last summer, Katie Horner
instructed people in my area (S. KC) to go into our
basements and put on our bicycle helmets. I was aghast
and that usually isn't easy to do. No wonder older
adults are terrified nowadays. They've only lived
through 60-70-80 years of inclement weather and now all
of the sudden everything is a potential life-ender. " -
